Obsolete Red Bird subway cars were dropped into the ocean off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey to create artificial reefs that would attract fish and edible marine life. Initially, there was great opposition to it, even among environmental groups, who worried that the cars would pollute the water. But they didn’t, and it spawned a robust ecosystem which created a fishing industry where there hadn’t been one.
