The giant black mountain in the background was an obstacle for many people, but some found a way to get through. The fist time I went to El Paso, I was riding in a car with a friend on a freeway that ran along the Rio Grande. All of sudden, a group of young men came running across the shallow Rio Grande into America. I had earlier been struck by the fact that on the American side, there were lots of nice houses, whereas if you looked across the river you would observe that many people lived in shacks. It never occurred to me at the time that they were in a terrible predicament; As long as they stayed in Mexico, they would probably remain poor.
